Brake Fade: Why Your Braking Distance Can Change on Long Descents

Brake fade: understand downhill braking

Brake fade happens when repeated heavy braking builds excessive heat in the braking system. On a long downhill stretch, that heat can reduce how effectively the brakes respond. For an HGV or LGV driver, the safer approach starts before the descent: choose an appropriate low gear, control speed early and avoid relying on the foot brake alone.

Plan the descent. Read the road ahead, follow any advisory signs and leave enough distance from the vehicle in front. If braking performance changes, do not press on as normal—find a safe place to stop and have the vehicle checked.

Key revision point: Gear selection and speed management should happen before the hill becomes a problem.
