A salt-spreading vehicle is a reminder to think carefully about the road ahead. For motorcyclists and cyclists, passing one calls for particular care.

What does the Highway Code say?
Rule 230 advises extra caution when overtaking vehicles spreading salt or other de-icer, especially for people riding motorcycles or bicycles. Do not treat that advice as an instruction to pass: only overtake when it is safe and legal.
The same rule warns that treated roads still require care and that conditions may change over short stretches. Leave room ahead and keep assessing the surface and traffic.

A useful revision question
Imagine a gritter ahead on your route. What would you check before deciding whether to pass? Explain your reasoning rather than treating overtaking as the automatic next step.
For another weather-related revision point, try our wet-weather stopping-distance quiz. Rule 227 says wet-road stopping distances are at least twice those on dry roads.
